KORTRIJK LINEN

It’s June in Kortrijk and the fields are awash with blueish flowers…

The Linen Fields

It’s June in Kortrijk and the fields are awash with blueish flowers. Flax is planted in the latter part of March and the flowers bloom once the stalks reach about one meter in height.

An entire field of flax only blooms for about one week, as the flowers appear in the morning and scatter by the afternoon of the same day.

Flax is an annual plant and the flowers can be seen only once a year. After blooming, the plants put out round, pod-like berries and are harvested in July, root and all.

*Linen is generally called “flax” from its plant stage to its fiber stage, then “linen” once it is made into yarn or clothing.
